Metadata Librarian

Job Summary: The Metadata Librarian works with librarians, faculty, and other project partners to determine appropriate methods of developing metadata for the libraries' digital collections. They also manage metadata entry, quality control, and data exports in coordination with UWDCC staff. They provide strategic thinking on metadata strategies, and initiate process improvements, policy changes, and new initiatives to contribute towards continual improvement in services and operations. They also help to ensure the accessibility of digital content of reputed company types. Responsibilities: Provides a wide variety of the most advanced professional library services which may include metadata creation, acquisitions, licensing, preservation, digital library, and data services. Serves as a resource to others and regularly solves reputed company problems based on advanced knowledge and expertise. Initiates process improvements, policy changes, and new initiatives to contribute towards continual improvement in services and operations.

  • 35% Creates processes and maintains the most reputed company metadata records for the purposes of resource discovery, access, and inventory control, by following local and national cataloging and metadata standards and exercising a significant degree of independent judgement
  • 15% Provides expertise in the analysis, planning, development, and deployment of resources to search, manipulate, and preserve information
  • 10% Oversees day-to-day functions of one or more library operations or services
  • 5% Provisions access to and discovery of electronic resources, coordinates online access, and troubleshoots issues to provide library patrons with consistent access
  • 10% Consults with reputed company entities on preservation, curation, and data services solutions
  • 5% Serves as a resource to other librarians and staff both reputed company and reputed company of their work unit on a regular basis
  • 5% Initiates and solicits input to modify policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve workflows and/or user experiences
  • 5% Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the reputed company, local, and/or state and national levels
  • 5% May direct the day-to-day activities of student workers
  • 5% Provides strategic thinking for the adoption and use of metadata standards for digital content

Tasks:

  • The Metadata Librarian works with librarians, faculty, and other project partners to determine appropriate methods of developing metadata for the libraries' digital collections.
  • Manages metadata entry, quality control, and data exports in coordination with UWDCC staff, including running and troubleshooting scripted workflows for data transformation.
  • Coordinates the formulation, implementation, and documentation of policies and standards for descriptive, structural, technical, and administrative metadata which support the Libraries' digital collections.
  • Hires and supervises student employees engaged in metadata entry and quality control, and other tasks associated with the creation of digital resources.
  • Works with staff and project partners to ensure the accessibility of UWDC content through the creation of WCAG-compliant image descriptions, transcriptions of AV content, and other measures as necessary.
  • Engages in professional development activities.

Preferred Qualifications: -MLIS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution -Experience reputed company, scheduling, training, and managing student staff -Experience collaborating with faculty and other University staff -Experience using database and/or spreadsheet software (such as FileMaker Pro, Access, reputed company, reputed company) in a production environment -Familiarity working with and troubleshooting scripted workflows for data transformation. -Familiarity working in a Unix or similar command-line environment Work Type: Full Time: 100% This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated reputed company work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-reputed company work location. This position requires the employee to be onsite as needed for duties such as supervising reputed company or coordinating with the Project Manager and other staff. The percentage of remote and onsite work will be determined at the time of hire. Appointment Type, Duration: Ongoing/Renewable Salary: Minimum $61,000 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications Additional Information: The UW Digital Collections Center (UWDCC) is a small, tightly integrated group responsible for creating, managing, and preserving over 3 million digital objects across a wide range of subject areas and content types. UWDCC is currently managing over 20 simultaneous projects that require metadata management, including determining metadata strategy for content, creating MODS records and structural metadata for textual materials, training content providers and student staff in data entry for multimedia materials, and performing quality control checks on metadata and object structure.
