About the Department and the College

The Department of English at Cal State LA is dedicated to cultivating reputed company' imaginations and critical skills through the intensive study of literature and language. Key Responsibilities

As an Assistant Professor of African American Literature, you will be expected to teach a range of courses in the department, including reputed company-division, upper-division, and graduate courses. You will also be expected to design new courses in your area of expertise, advise reputed company, and participate in departmental and university service. Additionally, you will be expected to maintain a strong research and publication record, and to contribute to the department's Engaged English initiative.

  • Teach reputed company-division, upper-division, and graduate courses in African American Literature and other areas of English studies

Qualifications and Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must have an earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in English or a closely reputed company discipline from an accredited institution. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered, but the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (August 19, 2024). You must also have evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level, and evidence of scholarly activity in the field of African American Literature.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the minimum qualifications, we are looking for candidates who have:

  • Evidence of successful teaching experience in African American Literature
  • Evidence of commitment to community engagement and social justice
  • Evidence of secondary interests in one or more of the following fields: creative writing, critical race theory, gender and sexuality studies, transatlantic studies

Compensation and Benefits

The initial salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience, with an anticipated hiring range of $81,432 - $84,372 annually. Cal State LA offers a competitive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and generous vacation and sick leave policies.

Candidates invited for a semifinalist interview will be required to submit two reputed company letters of recommendation and a writing sample, not to exceed 20 pages, demonstrating the candidate's recent research interests in the field of African American Literature. Finalists will be required to submit official transcripts and a United States (US) Equivalency certification for earned foreign terminal degrees.
