The Role: Senior Data Engineer - Big Data Processing & Analytics

We're seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our dynamic data infrastructure team. This is a remote opportunity with competitive compensation, allowing you to contribute to cutting-edge data solutions while enjoying the flexibility of remote work. In this role, you'll design and implement robust data products and features that power our analytics platforms, working closely with product owners, data analysts, and business partners to deliver exceptional value.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and Develop Data Solutions: Design and implement data products and features in close collaboration with product owners, data analysts, and business partners.
  • Big Data Infrastructure: Contribute to the overall architecture, frameworks, and standards for processing and evaluating big data at scale.
  • Technology Evaluation: Evaluate and integrate new technologies, tools, and frameworks aimed at processing large volumes of data efficiently.
  • Product Backlog Translation: Translate product backlog items into logical units of engineering work, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Implement Data Pipelines: Build and maintain distributed data processing pipelines using tools and languages prevalent in the big data ecosystem.
  • Create Reusable Components: Develop tools, user-defined functions, libraries, and frameworks to better enable data flow patterns and improve efficiency.
  • Collaborative Development: Work closely with engineering leads and cross-functional teams to ensure quality solutions are implemented and technical best practices are defined and followed.
  • Quality Assurance: Create and participate in automated unit tests and contribute to integration testing efforts to ensure data integrity and reliability.
  • CI/CD Implementation: Use and extend continuous integration and deployment frameworks to streamline the development and deployment of data solutions.
  • Troubleshooting & Analysis: Troubleshoot data issues, perform root cause analysis, and work in teams to resolve operational and performance challenges.
  • Data Feed Creation: Create and maintain data feeds that support various analytical and reporting needs across the organization.

Qualifications & Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Computer Information Systems.
  • Professional Experience: 2+ years of experience in the offered position or in a related computer-related position with demonstrated data engineering experience.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong proficiency with big data technologies including Spark, Hive, Hadoop, and distributed computing frameworks.
  • Programming Skills: Advanced knowledge of Python and other programming languages commonly used in data engineering.
  • Cloud Platform Experience: Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and big data solutions on cloud platforms.
  • Workflow Orchestration: Experience with workflow orchestration tools like Apache Airflow.
  • Big Data Platforms: Familiarity with big data platforms including EMR and Data Bricks.
  • Computer Science Fundamentals: Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms as they apply to large-scale data processing.
  • Testing Methodologies: Experience with automated unit testing and participating in integration tests for data systems.
  • CI/CD Practices: Knowledge of continuous integration and deployment practices for data pipelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional Experience: More than 2 years of experience in data engineering or related roles.
  • Advanced Degrees: PhD or additional specialized certifications in data science, machine learning, or related fields.
  • Industry Experience: Experience in retail, e-commerce, sports, or technology industries.
  • Leadership Experience: Demonstrated experience leading data engineering projects or mentoring junior team members.
  • Additional Technologies: Familiarity with emerging data technologies and best practices.
