The Office of the NYS Comptroller, led by Thomas P. DiNapoli, is seeking a Data Analyst 1 to evaluate government programs and analyze data for risk assessment. The role involves researching data sources, performing data analysis, and presenting findings to management.

Responsibilities

  • Use technical and analytical skills to evaluate a range of government programs and program areas including policy, procedures, operations, objectives and cost effectiveness to determine actual or potential risk
  • Research, identify, and evaluate data sources to determine reliability or usability limitations
  • Collect, manipulate, analyze, and interpret data, and present results to supervision, covering conclusions and recommendations based on evaluations made

Skills

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Data or Computer Science, Informatics, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field
  • A bachelor's degree in Data or Computer Science, Informatics, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field AND one (1) year of experience in Data Visualization, and Statistical Models and Data Mining tools
  • A master's degree or higher in Data or Computer Science, Informatics, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field
  • A bachelor's degree in Data or Computer Science, Informatics, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field AND two (2) year of experience in Data Visualization, and Statistical Models and Data Mining tools
  • A master's degree in Data or Computer Science, Informatics, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field AND one (1) year of experience in Data Visualization, and Statistical Models and Data Mining tools
  • A Ph.D. in Data or Computer Science, Informatics, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Proficient at conducting data processing, data formatting, and data analysis
  • Have computer programming experience (e.g., R, Python, Java, C++)
  • Strong critical thinking and professional judgement
  • Strong analytical thinker with excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively in a dynamic team environment

  • Telecommuting: The Office of the New York State Comptroller (OSC) supports telecommuting where it is reasonable to do so based upon the agency’s mission and operational needs. Generally, employees new to OSC will be restricted from telecommuting for at least 8 calendar weeks. After the initial 8 calendar week restriction, if an employee’s primary residence location, duties, and work performance are aligned with telecommuting and operational needs they may be allowed to do so. Generally, OSC employees may telecommute up to 5 days per pay period but may be approved to telecommute less.
